18June2008 Lightening our load in Houston

Weighed down by all the cold weather clothing we no longer needed, plus travel brochures and assorted memorabilia from our weeks on the road, we thought it was a brilliant idea to send some stuff back home. Ouch, what a costly lesson! We did not know that US Post has discontinued sending parcels by sea. (An exception - they will still send books only in huge canvas bags). Everything else had to go Priority Post. The nice lady that handled our parcel consoled us saying that it was still cheaper than paying the airlines for excess baggage, and in case we wondered - Fedex and UPS were more expensive.

We went to see Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones flick about crystal skulls or something like that. Anyway, it was too late to do any sight seeing. How was the movie? It was passable. We liked Harrison Ford but ageing is remorseless and even he can’t fight it.

The day ended with us stuffing our faces at Fung’s Chinese Restaurant (Fung Shing in Cantonese) - cracked dungeoness crab in black bean sauce, roasted ‘spring duck’ and Fung Shing spare ribs. After this meal, we were ready for some steak the next time we dined.

Distance traveled 56.3 miles

The ladies at US Post were really helpful.

Fung Shing spare ribs

Roasted 'spring duck' - very tender with crispy skin

Cracked dungeoness crab in black bean sauce - hmm, as good as one can get anywhere in the world

  • how was the food. i'm sure it is hard to find, but i'm told by a friend of mine who teaches at UT Dallas, that good chinese food exists in Texas if you know where to look. The trick is finding it. Even in New York, its much more likely to find bad chinese than good.
