22June2008 Fort Worth - Day off and a nice steak
Sunday, still in Fort Worth, repaid some of our sleep debt. Mulled over different itineraries for the days ahead – it was tough as there was so much that we wanted to see. Fatigue got the better of us and we spent more time just lounging around.
However we did find enough energy to go for dinner. Del Frisco was a downtown steakhouse highly recommended by Lonely Planet. The write-ups from other sources were also good. We arrived to find that it was opposite Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. No, we decided to stick to the restaurant originally chosen. We didn’t order starters and plunged right into the juicy 'sangre' meat – oh, the carnivores that we were. We divvyed up a 12oz prime strip with scallops, and a 16oz prime rib; the ‘sides’ we elected to add were jumbo onion rings, sauté mushrooms and creamy spinach with bacon bits. The ‘sides’ were so gigantic - we had to doggie-bag all of them. The Ladera 2003 Cab Sauvignon from Lone Canyon Vineyard, Napa Valley was an excellent complement to the steaks.
They had a lagniappe but I forgot what it was!
We wanted a nightcap and made our way to the White Elephant Saloon (walls full of small statuettes of white elephants). Written-up as a jumping joint where famous country stars frequent, we arrived at 10.45pm only to find the musicians coiling up their cords and returning the guitars to their cases - the joint was ready to close, darn it! Evidently, there was not enough business on a Sunday night! Oh well, you win some and lose some. We yawned and didn’t feel like trying anywhere else.
Distance traveled 24.2 miles

The mountain of onion rings was a challenge. The steaks were superb and so was the wine. Can't say the same for this photo - again my reluctance to use the flash.

We were very impressed with the great looking shopping bag the lady at the Visitors Center gave us. It had leather strips, instead of strings, for handles
